Dr. Alvaro Toubes Prata

Dr. Prata is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Federal University of Santa Catarina, UFSC. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from University of Brasilia, a Master in Mechanical Engineering from Federal University of Santa Catarina and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Minnesota. For the last 34 years, Dr. Prata has been at UFSC, teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, coordinating projects and conducting research. He has published over 230 scientific articles in journals and directed 41 master dissertations and 19 doctoral theses, and has two patents. Because of his recognized role in research and teaching at graduate level, he is ranked as 1A researcher at the Brazilian Research Council, CNPQ.
From 2000 to 2004, Dr. Prata was Vice-President for research and graduate education at UFSC and was elected president of the National Forum of Vice-Presidents for Research and Graduate Education of the Higher Education Institutions. He has been commended with the National Order of Scientific Merit - Grand Cross Class, awarded to people who are distinguished by outstanding contributions to science, and has received the Anisio Teixeira Education Award on the 60th anniversary of the Brazilian Agency for Higher Education, CAPES, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of Educational Institutions, Science and Technology in Brazil, through teaching, research and institutional leadership. From May 2008 to May 2012, he was the President of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, UFSC, and held the Vice-Presidency of the National Association of Presidents of Federal Institutions of Higher Education for two terms. Presently, he is the National Secretary for Technological Development and Innovation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
